The milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is a complex structure with numerous functions, and its composition is affected by many factors. There have been few systematic investigations on goat MFGM proteome profiling during lactation. Individual milk samples from 15 healthy dairy goats were obtained at six lactation time points for investigation of the MFGM proteome using both data-independent acquisition (DIA) and data-dependent acquisition (DDA) proteomics techniques combined with multivariate statistical analysis. Using the DIA method, 890 variably abundant MFGM proteins were discovered throughout the lactation cycle. From 1 to 240 d, butyrophilin subfamily 1 member A1, lipoprotein lipase, perilipin-2, and adipose triglyceride lipase were upregulated, while APOE, complement C3, clusterin, and IgG were downregulated. Furthermore, from 1 to 90 d, annexin A1, annexin A2, and antithrombin-III were downregulated, then upregulated by d 240. Albumin had a high degree of connectedness, indicating that it was a key protein, according to protein–protein interaction research. Overall, our findings gave new insights into the biological features of MFGM protein in goat milk throughout lactation, which may aid in the creation of specialized MFGM products and infant formula.

ABSTRACT: The distribution of mineral elements in milk is crucial for their absorption and utilization, however, there has been limited attention given to the status of mineral elements in goat milk. In this study, goat milk was collected at 4 lactation periods (1–3, 90, 150, 240 d) and separated into 4 fractions (fat, casein, whey, and aqueous phase). The concentrations of Mg, Ca, Na, K, Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, Co, Ni, Mo, and Cr in 4 fractions were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer. Our findings reveal that Ca, Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Cr exhibit the highest levels in casein, while Mo demonstrates the highest content in whey. Additionally, Mg, Na, K, and Ni display the highest concentrations in the aqueous phase. Specifically, the contents of Ca, Cu and Fe in casein decrease from 1–3 to 150 d of lactation but increase from 150 to 240 d of lactation. Furthermore, the content of Mg in the aqueous phase decreases from 1–3 to 90 d of lactation but increases from 90 to 240 d of lactation. The content of Na and K in the aqueous phase decreases from 1–3 to 150 d of lactation. Notably, the content of Mo in whey increases from 1–3 to 150 d of lactation and decreases from 150 to 240 d. Our research contributes to the advancement of understanding the bioavailability of mineral elements in goat milk.

Abstract Objective To compare the similarities and differences between patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and those with other community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), utilizing propensity score matching (PSM), regarding hospitalization expenses, treatment options, and prognostic outcomes, aiming to inform the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. Methods Patients admitted to the ICU of the Third People’s Hospital of Datong City, diagnosed with COVID-19 from December 2022 to February 2023, constituted the observation group, while those with other CAP admitted from January to November 2022 formed the control group. Basic information, clinical data at admission, and time from symptom onset to admission were matched using PSM. Results A total of 70 patients were included in the COVID-19 group and 119 in the CAP group. The patients were matched by the propensity matching method, and 37 patients were included in each of the last two groups. After matching, COVID-19 had a higher failure rate than CAP, but the difference was not statistically significant (73% vs. 51%, p = 0.055). Abstract It is important to study the bacteria that cause endometritis to identify effective therapeutic drugs for dairy cows. In this study, 20% oxytetracycline was used to treat Holstein cows (n = 6) with severe endometritis. Additional 10 Holstein cows (5 for healthy cows, 5 for cows with mild endometritis) were also selected. At the same time, changes in bacterial communities were monitored by high-throughput sequencing. The results show that Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and other common pathogenic bacteria could be detected by traditional methods in cows both with and without endometritis. However, 16S sequencing results show that changes in the abundance of these bacteria were not significant. Endometritis is often caused by mixed infections in the uterus. Oxytetracycline did not completely remove existing bacteria. However, oxytetracycline could effectively inhibit endometritis and had a significant inhibitory effect on the genera Bacteroides, Trueperella, Peptoniphilus, Parvimonas, Porphyromonas, and Fusobacterium but had no significant inhibitory effect on the bacterial genera Marinospirillum, Erysipelothrix, and Enteractinococcus. During oxytetracycline treatment, the cell motility, endocrine system, exogenous system, glycan biosynthesis and metabolism, lipid metabolism, metabolism of terpenoids, polyketides, cofactors and vitamins, signal transduction, and transport and catabolism pathways were affected.

The focus of this paper was to explore the stability issues associated with delayed neural networks (DNNs). We introduced a novel approach that departs from the existing methods of using quadratic functions to determine the negative definite of the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional's (LKFs) derivative $ \dot{V}(t) $. Instead, we proposed a new method that utilizes the conditions of positive definite quadratic function to establish the positive definiteness of LKFs. Based on this approach, we constructed a novel the relaxed LKF that contains delay information. In addition, some combinations of inequalities were extended and used to reduce the conservatism of the results obtained. The criteria for achieving delay-dependent asymptotic stability were subsequently presented in the framework of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example confirmed the effectiveness of the theoretical result.

This paper proposes an improvement in the test method for determining the flexural dynamic modulus of elasticity of strawboard with two triangular prisms as supports, for quality control and classification. Free-plate modal and free-plate transient excitation methods were used to test the elastic modulus of 1/4-plate and whole-plate strawboards. The dynamic test results were verified with the four-point bending method and tensile method. The results show that the elastic moduli of strawboards is approximately 2 GPa. The dynamic test method proposed is efficient, simple, repeatable, and accurate. This method is more suitable for factory applications than existing dynamic testing methods. The framed cases produced by the strawboard all meet the performance requirements in GB/T 7284 (2016).

Abstract Background and objectives Aging poses a significant challenge worldwide, with China’s aging status becoming particularly severe. What is the impact of Internet use on the health of the elderly? Existing studies have drawn conflicting conclusions that Internet use improves or harms health. The purpose of this study was to explore how Internet use affects the health of older adults, and the mechanisms and heterogeneity of these effects. Research design and methods Based on Grossman’s theory, this paper constructs a health production function model. Using the data of China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2014 to 2020, we investigated the impact of Internet use on the health of older adults using fixed effect model and instrumental variable method. We also examined the mediating role of health information acquisition, lifestyle, and social interaction in these associations. Results Internet use is positively associated with self-rated health and negatively associated with psychological sub-health level. Internet use promotes the health of older adults by facilitating access to health information, healthy lifestyles, and enhancing social interaction. And the impacts are heterogeneous at the individual and regional levels. Discussion and implications We should progressively enhance the level of internet accessibility for older adults, while concurrently addressing and narrowing the ‘digital divide’. By generating an abundance of superior health-related information, we can significantly improve health education tailored for the elderly. Additionally, it is crucial to offer extensive training opportunities designed to equip older adults with the necessary skills to proficiently navigate the internet.

Abstract Background Culex pipiens pallens and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus are the dominant species of Culex mosquitoes in China and important disease vectors. Long-term use of insecticides can cause mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene of mosquitoes, but little is known about the current status and evolutionary origins of vgsc gene in different geographic populations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the current status of vgsc genes in Cx. p. pallens and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus in China and to investigate the evolutionary inheritance of neighboring downstream introns of the vgsc gene to determine the impact of insecticides on long-term evolution. Methods Sampling was conducted from July to September 2021 in representative habitats of 22 provincial-level administrative divisions in China. Genomic DNA was extracted from 1308 mosquitoes, the IIS6 fragment of the vgsc gene on the nerve cell membrane was amplified using polymerase chain reaction, and the sequence was used to evaluate allele frequency and knockdown resistance (kdr) frequency. MEGA 11 was used to construct neighbor-joining (NJ) tree. PopART was used to build a TCS network. Results There were 6 alleles and 6 genotypes at the L1014 locus, which included the wild-type alleles TTA/L and CTA/L and the mutant alleles TTT/F, TTC/F, TCT/S and TCA/S. The geographic populations with a kdr frequency less than 20.00% were mainly concentrated in the regions north of 38° N, and the geographic populations with a kdr frequency greater than 80.00% were concentrated in the regions south of 30° N. kdr frequency increased with decreasing latitude. And within the same latitude, the frequency of kdr in large cities is relatively high. Mutations were correlated with the number of introns. The mutant allele TCA/S has only one intron, the mutant allele TTT/F has three introns, and the wild-type allele TTA/L has 17 introns. Conclusions Cx. p. pallens and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus have developed resistance to insecticides in most regions of China. The neighboring downstream introns of the vgsc gene gradually decreased to one intron with the mutation of the vgsc gene. Mutations may originate from multiple mutation events rather than from a single origin, and populations lacking mutations may be genetically isolated. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Weed control is essential for agricultural floor management in vineyards and the inter-row mulching is an eco-friendly practice to inhibit weed growth via filtering out photosynthetically active radiation. Besides weed suppression, inter-row mulching can influence grapevine growth and the accumulation of metabolites in grape berries. However, the complex interaction of multiple factors in the field challenges the understanding of molecular mechanisms on the regulated metabolites. In the current study, black geotextile inter-row mulch (M) was applied for two vintages (2016–2017) from anthesis to harvest. Metabolomics and transcriptomics analysis were conducted in two vintages, aiming to provide insights into metabolic and molecular responses of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to M in a semi-arid climate. Results Upregulation of genes related to photosynthesis and heat shock proteins confirmed that M weakened the total light exposure and grapes suffered heat stress, resulting in lower sugar-acid ratio at harvest. Key genes responsible for enhancements in phenylalanine, glutamine, ornithine, arginine, and C6 alcohol concentrations, and the downward trend in ε-viniferin, anthocyanins, flavonols, terpenes, and norisoprenoids in M grapes were identified. In addition, several modules significantly correlated with the metabolic biomarkers through weighted correlation network analysis, and the potential key transcription factors regulating the above metabolites including VviGATA11, VviHSFA6B, and VviWRKY03 were also identified. Conclusion This study provides a valuable overview of metabolic and transcriptomic responses of M grapes in semi-arid climates, which could facilitate understanding the complex regulatory network of metabolites in response to microclimate changes.

Abstract Background Environmental stresses negatively impact reproductive development and yield. Drought stress, in particular, has been examined during Arabidopsis reproductive development at morphological and transcriptomic levels. However, drought-responsive transcriptomic changes at different points in reproductive development remain unclear. Additionally, an investigation of the entire transcriptome at various stages during flower development is of great interest. Results Here, we treat Arabidopsis plants with well-watered and moderately and severely limiting water amounts when the first flowers reach maturity and generate RNA-seq datasets for early, middle, and late phases during flower development at 5, 6, and 7 days following treatment. Under different drought conditions, flowers in different developmental phases display differential sets of drought-responsive genes (DTGs), including those that are enriched in different GO functional categories, such as transcriptional regulation and response to stresses (early phase), lipid storage (middle phase), and pollen and seed development and metabolic processes (late phase). Some gene families have different members induced at different floral phases, suggesting that similar biochemical functions are carried out by distinct members. Developmentally-regulated genes (DVGs) with differential expression among the three floral phases belong to GO terms that are similar between water conditions, such as development and reproduction, metabolism and transport, and signaling and stress response. However, for different water conditions, such similar GO terms correspond to either distinct gene families or different members of a gene family, suggesting that drought affects the expression of distinct families or family members during reproductive development. A further comparison among transcriptomes of tissues collected on different days after treatment identifies differential gene expression, suggesting age-related genes (ARGs) might reflect the changes in the overall plant physiology in addition to drought response and development. Conclusion Together, our study provides new insights into global transcriptome reprogramming and candidate genes for drought response, flower development, aging and coordination among these complex biological processes.

Abstract Objective To compare the potential efficacy and safety of dual therapy and quadruple therapy with vonoprazan (VPZ) as well as the standard quadruple therapy of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in Hainan province. Methods A single-centre, non-blinded, non-inferiority randomized controlled trial was conducted at the outpatient department of gastroenterology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University from June 2022 to February 2023. 135 patients aged 18–75 years with Hp infection were enrolled and randomized into three different groups (group V1: VPZ 20 mg twice a day and amoxicillin 1.0 g three times a day for 14 days V2: vonoprazan 20 mg, amoxicillin capsules 1.0 g, furazolidone 0.1 g and bismuth potassiulm citrate 240 mg, twice daily for 14 days;; group V3: ilaprazole 5 mg, Amoxicillin 1.0 g, Furazolidone 100 mg, bismuth potassiulm citrate 240 mg, twice a day for 14 days). Four weeks after the end of treatment, Hp eradication was confirmed by rechecking 13C-urea breath test (UBT). Results The eradication efficacy of V1 and V3 was non-inferior to that of V2, which is consistent with the results obtained from the Kruskal-Wallis H test. The eradication rate by intentional analysis was 84.4% (38/45, 95%CI 73.4%–95.5%, P>0.05) for all the three groups. If analyzed by per-protocol, the eradication rates were 88.4% (38/43, 95%CI 78.4%–98.4%), 92.7% (38/41, 95%CI 84.4%–101.0%),88.4% (38/43，95%CI 78.4%–98.4%) in groups V1, V2 and V3, respectively, which did not show a significant difference (P > 0.05). Abstract Background Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is associated with a high prevalence of cancer-related deaths. The survival rates of patients are significantly lower in late-stage ccRCC than in early-stage ccRCC, due to the spread and metastasis of late-stage ccRCC, surgery has not reached the goal of radical cure, and the effect of traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy is poor. Thus, it is crucial to accurately assess the prognosis and provide personalized treatment at an early stage in ccRCC. This study aims to develop an efficient nomogram model for stratifying and predicting the survival of ccRCC patients based on tumor stage. Methods We first analyzed the microarray expression data of ccRCC patients from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and categorized them into two groups based on the disease stage (early and late stage). Subsequently, the GEO2R tool was applied to screen out the genes that were highly expressed in all GEO datasets. Finally, the clinicopathological data of the two patient groups were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, and the differences were compared between groups. Survival analysis was performed to evaluate the prognostic value of candidate genes (PSAT1, PRAME, and KDELR3) in ccRCC patients. Based on the screened gene PSAT1 and clinical parameters that were significantly associated with patient prognosis, we established a new nomogram model, which was further optimized to a single clinical variable-based model. The expression level of PSAT1 in ccRCC tissues was further verified by qRT-PCR, Western blotting, and immunohistochemical analysis. Results The datasets GSE73731, GSE89563, and GSE150404 identified a total of 22, 89, and 120 over-expressed differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively. Among these profiles, there were three genes that appeared in all three datasets based on different stage groups. The overall survival (OS) of late-stage patients was significantly shorter than that of early-stage patients. Among the three candidate genes (PSAT1, PRAME, and KDELR3), PSAT1 was shown to be associated with the OS of patients with late-stage ccRCC. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that age, tumor grade, neoadjuvant therapy, and PSAT1 level were significantly associated with patient prognosis. The concordance indices were 0.758 and 0.725 for the 3-year and 5-year OS, respectively. The new model demonstrated superior discrimination and calibration compared with the single clinical variable model. The enhancer PSAT1 used in the new model was shown to be significantly overexpressed in tissues from patients with late-stage ccRCC, as demonstrated by the mRNA level, protein level, and pathological evaluation. Conclusion The new prognostic prediction nomogram model of PSAT1 and clinicopathological variables combined was thus established, which may provide a new direction for individualized treatment for different-stage ccRCC patients.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) regulating the immune microenvironment of cancer is a hot spot. But little is known about the influence of the immune-related lncRNA (IRlncRs) on the chemotherapeutic responses and prognosis of cervical cancer (CC) patients. The purpose of the study was to identify an immune-related lncRNAs (IRlncRs)-based model for the prospective prediction of clinical outcomes in CC patients. Methods CC patients’ relevant data was acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Correlation analysis and Cox regression analyses were applied. A risk score formula was formulated. Prognostic factors were combined into a nomogram, while sensitivity for chemotherapy drugs was analyzed using the OncoPredict algorithm. Results Eight optimal IRlncRs(ATP2A1-AS1, LINC01943, AL158166.1, LINC00963, AC009065.8, LIPE-AS1, AC105277.1, AC098613.1.) were incorporated in the IRlncRs model. The overall survival (OS) of the high-risk group of the model was inferior to those in the low-risk group. Further analysis demonstrated this eight-IRlncRs model as a useful prognostic marker. The Nomogram had a concordance index of survival prediction of 0.763(95% CI 0.746–0.780) and more robust predictive accuracy. Furthermore, patients in the low-risk group were found to be more sensitive to chemotherapy, including Paclitaxel, Rapamycin, Epirubicin, Vincristine, Docetaxel and Vinorelbine. Conclusions An eight-IRlncRs-based prediction model was identified that has the potential to be an important tool to predict chemotherapeutic responses and prognosis for CC patients.

Abstract Ferroptosis is a novel form of programmed death, dependent on iron ions and oxidative stress, with a predominant intracellular form of lipid peroxidation. In recent years, ferroptosis has gained more and more interest of people in the treatment mechanism of targeted tumors. mTOR, always overexpressed in the tumor, and controlling cell growth and metabolic activities, has an important role in both autophagy and ferroptosis. Interestingly, the selective types of autophay plays an important role in promoting ferroptosis, which is related to mTOR and some metabolic pathways (especially in iron and amino acids). In this paper, we list the main mechanisms linking ferroptosis with mTOR signaling pathway and further summarize the current compounds targeting ferroptosis in these ways. There are growing experimental evidences that targeting mTOR and ferroptosis may have effective impact in many tumors, and understanding the mechanisms linking mTOR to ferroptosis could provide a potential therapeutic approach for tumor treatment.

The issue of whether CoCrFeNi is a single-phase or dual-phase high-entropy alloy (HEA) has long been in dispute. In this study, CoCrFeNi has been verified to be a dual-phase HEA composed of dendritic phases with an FCC structure and inter-dendritic phases with a BCC structure. The BCC phases within inter-dendritic regions are identified as Cr3O oxides which form inevitably under the arc-melting process. Undercooling treatment under a strong magnetic field can regulate the composition and precipitation of the BCC phase, refine the grain size, and enhance the solid solubility, consequently, the mechanical performances of CoCrFeNi HEA are effectively enhanced.

Grid-tie voltage source converters (VSCs) can operate in three distinct modes: AC-dominant, DC-dominant, and balanced, depending on the placement of the stiff voltage sources. The distinct operation modes of the VSCs traditionally demand different synchronization control techniques, leading to heterogeneous VSCs. It is challenging for the power system to accommodate and coordinate heterogeneous VSCs. A promising universal synchronization control technique for VSCs is the DC-link voltage synchronization control (DVSC) based on a lead compensator (LC). The LC DVSC stabilizes both the DC and AC voltages of a VSC while achieving synchronization with the AC grid. This results in a dual-port grid-forming (DGFM) characteristic for the VSC. However, there has been very limited study on the stability and synchronization controller design of the VSCs with the LC DVSC operating in various modes. To bridge this gap, the paper presents a quantitative analysis on the stability and steady-state performance of the LC DVSC in all three operation modes of the DGFM VSC. Based on the analysis, the paper provides step-by-step design guidelines for the LC DVSC. Furthermore, the paper uncovers an instability issue related to the LC DVSC when the DGFM VSC operates in the balanced mode. To tackle the instability issue, a virtual resistance control is proposed and integrated with the LC DVSC. Simulation results validate the analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the DGFM VSC with the LC DVSC designed using the proposed guidelines in all three operation modes. Overall, the paper demonstrates the feasibility of employing the DGFM VSC with the LC DVSC for all three possible operation modes, which can help overcome the challenges associated with accommodating and coordinating heterogeneous VSCs in the power system.

Medical image generation has recently garnered significant interest among researchers. However, the primary generative models, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), often encounter challenges during training, including mode collapse. To address these issues, we proposed the AE-COT-GAN model (Autoencoder-based Conditional Optimal Transport Generative Adversarial Network) for the generation of medical images belonging to specific categories. The training process of our model comprises three fundamental components. The training process of our model encompasses three fundamental components. First, we employ an autoencoder model to obtain a low-dimensional manifold representation of real images. Second, we apply extended semi-discrete optimal transport to map Gaussian noise distribution to the latent space distribution and obtain corresponding labels effectively. This procedure leads to the generation of new latent codes with known labels. Finally, we integrate a GAN to train the decoder further to generate medical images. To evaluate the performance of the AE-COT-GAN model, we conducted experiments on two medical image datasets, namely DermaMNIST and BloodMNIST. The model’s performance was compared with state-of-the-art generative models. Results show that the AE-COT-GAN model had excellent performance in generating medical images. Moreover, it effectively addressed the common issues associated with traditional GANs.

The integration of underground coal gasification (UCG) and carbon emission reduction is expected to become an excellent green energy technology during the transitional stage from the current to the arrival of carbon neutrality, and even play an important role in the longer history of carbon neutrality in the future. Looking back at the research history and current situation, the systematic strategy for UCG emission reduction has been basically formed, which can be summarized into five specific approaches. Among them, the targeted underground in-situ regulation can reduce the CO2 release and promote the quality and yield increase of UCG synthesis gas, and the relevant strategies and approaches can be summarized as the Carbon Regulation and Reduction (CRR). There are many research achievements on the supercritical gas storage of UCG-CO2 in underground space, mainly focusing on storage media, storage space, storage capacity, etc., with some discussions for storage mechanisms. The mineralization and storage of UCG-CO2 in underground space are not constrained by the harsh conditions of geological stability and sealing, and there is a potential dual effect of both carbon sequestration and gas conversion, but there are not many research results yet. The previous exploration of UCG-CO2 reinjection, utilization and storage focuses on two aspects, such as enhancing coalbed methane production and improving the production of UCG synthesis gas, and a series of explorations have been initiated for the emission reduction and utilization of CO2 from the tail gas of UCG hydrogen production in recent years. The CRR, as an active emission reduction strategy, targetedly reduces the CO2 concentration in the UCG synthesis gas by adjusting the gasifying agent and its injection method, and there are many theoretical achievements and preliminary on-site verification, which are expected to become a practical clean coal technology that integrates clean energy production and carbon reduction. Reviewing the progress and analyzing the shortcomings, the scientific and technological research for UCG carbon emission reduction has made many substantial achievements, but also still faces some challenges of sustainable development, and the future study should focus on four aspects. One is to prioritize the development of UCG-CO2 underground conversion and utilization technology with a focus on the UCG-CRR based on feasibility. The second is to focus on the shortcomings and to strive for the breakthrough of the collaborative mechanism and key technological bottlenecks of both UCG emission reduction and synthesis gas quality improvement. The third is to make solid progess and promote the prior implementation of UCG-CRR pilot tests and engineering demonstrations for the achievement of practical results step by step. The fourth is to ensure the implementation and establishment of the “trinity” policy support system for the UCG emission reduction consisting of carbon neutrality and management strategy, special science and technology action plans, and professional talent training.

This paper reports an experimental on the flexural performance of prestressed concrete-encased high-strength steel beams (PCEHSSBs). To study the applicability of high-strength steel (HSS) in prestressed concrete-encased steel beams (PCESBs), one simply supported prestressed concrete-encased ordinarystrength steel beam (PCEOSSB) and eight simply supported PCEHSSBs were tested under a four-point bending load. The influence of steel strength grade, I-steel ratio, reinforcement ratio and stirrup ratio on the flexural performance of such members was investigated. The test results show that increasing the I-steel grade and I-steel ratio can significantly improve the bearing capacity of PCESB. Increasing the compressive reinforcement ratio of PCEHSSB can effectively improve its bearing capacity and ductility properties, making full use of the performance of HSS in composite beams. Increasing the hoop ratio has a small improvement on the load capacity of the test beams; setting up shear connectors can improve the ductile properties of the specimens although it does not lead to a significant increase in the load capacity of the combined beams. Then, combined with the test data, the comprehensive reinforcement index considering the location of reinforcement was proposed to evaluate the crack resistance of specimens. The relationship between the comprehensive reinforcement index and the crack resistance of specimens was given.

Abstract The Tibetan grassland ecosystems possess significant carbon sink potential and have room for improved carbon sequestration processes. There is a need to uncover more ambitious and coherent solutions (e.g., Nature-based Solutions) to increase carbon sequestration. Here, we investigated the rationale and urgency behind the implementation of Nature-based Solutions on sequestering carbon using literature review and meta-analysis. We also project the changes in terrestrial carbon sink of Tibetan Plateau grassland ecosystems using model simulations with different future emissions scenario. The results show that the Nature-based Solution projects are expected to increase the carbon sink of Tibetan Plateau grassland ecosystems by 15 to 21 tetragrams of carbon by 2060. We defined a conceptual framework of Nature-based Solutions that integrates initiatives for the restoration of degraded grasslands and carbon sequestration. Our framework consists of four stages: theory, identification, practice, and goal. Traditional Tibetan knowledge plays an important role in reframing the proposed Nature-based Solutions framework. We also apply this framework to optimize ecological restoration techniques and projects and to evaluate the annual changes in the carbon sink under different socioeconomic pathway scenarios.

Abstract To investigate the hypolipidemic and modulation effects of probiotics, the golden hamster of hyperlipidemia model was established and intervened with Lactobacillus fermentum GLF‐217 (GLF‐217) and lovastatin (LOV) for 6 weeks. Body weight and serum biochemical indexes were measured, and liver, colonic contents, and feces were collected after autopsy for pathological and gut microbiota analysis. The results showed that the intervention of GLF‐217 and LOV could significantly reduce serum lipid levels and liver fat accumulation in golden hamsters on a high‐fat diet, more importantly, the LOV intervention could cause damage to the liver. The LOV intervention significantly reduced the contents of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colonic and downregulated the abundance of SCFAs‐producing bacteria, but GLF‐217 intake increased butyric acid, thus reducing blood lipids and protected the liver. This study elucidates the possible mechanism of the hypolipidemic effect of probiotics in terms of regulating gut microbiota.

Abstract The precise temporal coordination of neural activity is crucial for brain function. In the hippocampus, this precision is reflected in the oscillatory rhythms observed in CA1. While it is known that a balance between excitatory and inhibitory activity is necessary to generate and maintain these oscillations, the differential contribution of feedforward and feedback inhibition remains ambiguous. Here we use conditional genetics to chronically silence CA1 pyramidal cell transmission, ablating the ability of these neurons to recruit feedback inhibition in the local circuit, while recording physiological activity in mice. We find that this intervention leads to local pathophysiological events, with ripple amplitude and intrinsic frequency becoming significantly larger and spatially triggered local population spikes locked to the trough of the theta oscillation appearing during movement. These phenotypes demonstrate that feedback inhibition is crucial in maintaining local sparsity of activation and reveal the key role of lateral inhibition in CA1 in shaping circuit function.

Abstract Iso-butene (iso-C4H8) is an important raw material in chemical industry, whereas its efficient separation remains challenging due to similar molecular properties of C4 olefins. The ideal adsorbent should possess simultaneous high uptakes for 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) and n-butene (n-C4H8) counterparts, endowing high efficiency for iso-C4H8 separation in adsorption columns. Herein, a sulfate-pillared adsorbent, SOFOUR-DPDS-Ni (DPDS = 4,4′-dipyridyldisulfide), is reported for the efficient iso-C4H8 separation from binary and ternary C4 olefin mixtures. The rigidity in pore sizes and shapes of SOFOUR-DPDS-Ni exerts the molecular sieving of iso-C4H8, while exhibiting high C4H6 and n-C4H8 uptakes. The benchmark Henry’s selectivity for C4H6/iso-C4H8 (2321.8) and n-C4H8/iso-C4H8 (233.5) outperforms most reported adsorbents. Computational simulations reveal the strong interactions for C4H6 and n-C4H8. Furthermore, dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate the direct production of high-purity iso-C4H8 (>99.9%) from C4H6/iso-C4H8 (50/50, v/v), n-C4H8/iso-C4H8 (50/50, v/v), and C4H6/n-C4H8/iso-C4H8 (50/15/35, v/v/v) gas-mixtures.

Abstract. Background:. Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) ranks among the foremost factors responsible for mortality on a global scale. The mortality patterns of CVDs and temporal trends in China need to be well-illustrated and updated. Methods:. We collected mortality data on patients with CVD from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Disease Surveillance Points (CDC-DSP) system. The mortality of CVD in 2020 was described by age, sex, residence, and region. The temporal trend from 2013 to 2019 was evaluated using joinpoint regression, and estimated rates of decline were extrapolated until 2030 using time series models. Results:. In 2019, the age-standardized mortality in China (ASMRC) per 100,000 individuals was 113.2. The ASMRC for males (137.7/105) and rural areas (123.0/105) were both higher when stratified by gender and urban/rural residence. The central region had the highest mortality (126.5/105), the western region had a slightly lower mortality (123.5/105), and the eastern region had the lowest mortality (97.3/105). The age-specific mortality showed an accelerated upward trend from aged 55–59 years, with maximum mortality observed in individuals over 85 years of age. The age-standardized mortality of CVD decreased by 2.43% (95% confidence interval, 1.02–3.81%) annually from 2013 to 2019. Notably, the age-specific mortality of CVD increased from 2013 to 2019 for the age group of over 85 years. In 2020, both the absolute number of CVD cases and the crude mortality of CVD have increased compared to their values in 2019. The estimated total deaths due to CVD were estimated to reach 2.3 million in 2025 and 2.4 million in 2030. Conclusion:. The heightened focus on the burden of CVD among males, rural areas, the central and western of China, and individuals aged 75 years and above has emerged as a pivotal determinant in further decreasing mortalities, consequently presenting novel challenges to strategies for disease prevention and control.

Abstract Plague, as an ancient zoonotic disease caused by Yersinia pestis, has brought great disasters. The natural plague focus of Marmota himalayana in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the largest, which has been constantly active and the leading source of human plague in China for decades. Understanding the population genetics of M. himalayana and relating that information to the biogeographic distribution of Yersinia pestis and plague outbreaks are greatly beneficial for the knowledge of plague spillover and arecrucial for pandemic prevention. In the present research, we assessed the population genetics of M. himalayana. We carried out a comparative study of plague outbreaks and the population genetics of M. himalayana on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We found that M. himalayana populations are divided into two main clusters located in the south and north of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Fourteen DFR genomovars of Y. pestis were found and exhibited a significant region-specific distribution. Additionally, the increased genetic diversity of plague hosts is positively associated with human plague outbreaks. This insight gained can improve our understanding of biodiversity for pathogen spillover and provide municipally directed targets for One Health surveillance development, which will be an informative next step toward increased monitoring of M. himalayana dynamics.

Abstract Background In the regenerative endodontic procedures, scaffolds could influence the prognosis of affected teeth. Currently, there is controversy regarding the postoperative evaluation of various scaffolds for pulp regeneration. The objective of this study was to access whether other scaffolds, used alone or in combination with blood clot (BC), are more effective than BC in regenerative endodontic procedures. Methods We systematically search the PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Embase, and Google Scholar databases. Randomized controlled trials examining the use of BC and other scaffold materials in the regenerative endodontic procedures were included. A random effects model was used for the meta-analysis. The GRADE method was used to determine the quality of the evidence. Results We screened 168 RCTs related to young permanent tooth pulp necrosis through electronic and manual retrieval. A total of 28 RCTs were related to regenerative endodontic procedures. Ultimately, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the relevant meta-analysis. Only 2 studies were assessed to have a low risk of bias. High quality evidence indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in the success rate between the two groups (RR=0.99, 95% CI=0.96 to 1.03; 434 participants, 12 studies); low-quality evidence indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in the increase in root length or root canal wall thickness between the two groups. Medium quality evidence indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in pulp vitality testing between the two groups. Conclusions For clinical regenerative endodontic procedures, the most commonly used scaffolds include BC, PRP, and PRF. All the different scaffolds had fairly high clinical success rates, and the difference was not significant. For regenerative endodontic procedures involving young permanent teeth with pulp necrosis, clinical practitioners could choose a reasonable scaffold considering the conditions of the equipment and patients.

Background and Aim: Xuefu Zhuyu decoction (XZD), a traditional Chinese medicinal formula, was firstly recorded in the Qing dynasty of ancient China and previously demonstrated to ameliorate hepatic steatosis. In the present study, the effects of XZD on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by high-fat diet (HFD) were evaluated in mice and the hepatic transcriptome was detected to disclose the potential mechanisms of XZD. Experimental procedure: The effects of XZD (low- and high-dosage) on NAFLD induced by HFD for 16 weeks were evaluated. Obeticholic acid was used as control drug. Body weight, food intake and index of homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were analyzed. Hepatic histology were observed in haematoxylin and eosin stained sections and quantified with NAFLD activity score (NAS). Lipid in hepatocytes was visualized by Oil red staining. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and hepatic triglyceride (TG) was measured. The hepatic transcriptom was detected with RNA-sequencing and validated with real-time polymerase chain reaction, western-blotting and hepatic quantitative metabolomics. Results: XZD ameliorated hepatic histology of NAFLD mice, accompanied with decreasing fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, NAS, ALT and hepatic TG. The hepatic transcriptom of NAFLD was significantly reversed by XZD treatment, especially the genes enriched in the pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism, fatty acid degradation, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction and extracellular matrix (ECM) -receptor interaction. The hepatic quantitative metabolomics analysis confirmed fatty acid degradation as the key targeting pathway of XZD. Conclusions: XZD ameliorated NAFLD induced by HFD, which probably correlated closely to the pathways of fatty acid degradation.

As a new type of marine titanium alloy, Ti–6Al–3Nb–2Zr–1Mo (Ti6321) has gained attention for its comprehensive properties such as high toughness, strength, weldability, and corrosion resistance. However, there are only a few reports on fatigue properties of Ti6321. In this study, the dwell fatigue and low cycle fatigue tests were performed under various maximum load stresses with the stress ratio of R = 0. Experimental results revealed that the failure can be classified into brittle and ductile types. Fatigue life decreases with the increase of maximum load stress. The dwell time facilitates the accumulation of plastic strain in each loading-unloading cycle and significantly reduces fatigue life. The stress-strain response in the initial period of loading has a decisive effect on fatigue life for both low-cycle and dwell fatigue. The plastic strain energy density in the first loading cycle and fatigue life satisfies the power law relationship, which can be utilized to predict the load holding and low cycle fatigue life of Ti6321.

With the enhancement of data collection capabilities, massive streaming data have been accumulated in numerous application scenarios. Specifically, the issue of classifying data streams based on mobile sensors can be formalized as a multi-task multi-view learning problem with a specific task comprising multiple views with shared features collected from multiple sensors. Existing incremental learning methods are often single-task single-view, which cannot learn shared representations between relevant tasks and views. An adaptive multi-task multi-view incremental learning framework for data stream classification called MTMVIS is proposed to address the above challenges, utilizing the idea of multi-task multi-view learning. Specifically, the attention mechanism is first used to align different sensor data of different views. In addition, MTMVIS uses adaptive Fisher regularization from the perspective of multi-task multi-view learning to overcome catastrophic forgetting in incremental learning. Results reveal that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods based on the experiments on two different datasets with other baselines.

ObjectiveTarget tracking is an important application of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). This study proposes a relative time-varying tracking position (RTTP) strategy to improve the tracking stability and address the problem that the reference trajectory obtained by the relative fixed tracking position (RFTP) strategy contains inflection points and leads to tracking instability.MethodsA first-order hysteresis filter is used to process the target USV's heading variation. The time-varying tracking position is then designed according to the filtered data, the target tracking problem is transformed into a trajectory tracking problem and the reference trajectory is obtained. Finally, model predictive control (MPC) is used to achieve the tracking of the target USV.ResultsThe simulation experimental results show that the tracking effect of the USV under the RTTP strategy is more stable with the root mean square error (RMSE) of the tracking distance decreased by 28.06% and the energy consumption reduced by 5.93%. It also has advantages in the smoothness of the control volume.ConclusionsCompared with the traditional RFTP strategy, the proposed RTTP strategy can effectively improve the stability of USV target tracking, giving it practical significance for the target tracking of USVs.

The extruded AZ80+0.4% Ce magnesium alloy was twisted in the temperature range of 300 - 380 °C by using a Gleeble 3500 thermal simulation test machine with a torsion unit. The deformed cylindrical specimens were cooled at a cooling rate of 10 °C/s or 0.1 °C/s, respectively, and aged at 170 °C. The microstructure analysis results showed that the grain size decreased with increasing specimen radial position from center (SRPC), and that the strong initial basal texture of the extruded magnesium alloy was weakened. Both continuous and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization mechanisms were involved in contributing to the grain refinement for all specimens investigated. And a novel extension twinning induced dynamic recrystallization mechanism was proposed for specimen deformed at 300 °C. For the specimens deformed at 300 °C and 340 °C followed by a slow cooling rate (0.1 °C/s), precipitates of various shapes (β-Mg17Al12), with the dominant precipitates being on the grains boundaries, appeared on the surface section. For specimen deformed at 380 °C, lamellar precipitates (LPS) in the interiors of the grains were predominant. After aging, the LPS still dominated for specimens twisted at 380 °C; however, the LPS gradually decreased with decreasing deformation temperatures from 380 °C to 300 °C. Dynamically precipitated β, especially those decorating the grain boundaries, changed the competition pictures for the LPS and precipitates of other shapes after aging. Interestingly, LPS dominated the areas for the center section of the specimens after aging regardless of deformation temperatures. Low temperature deformation with high SRPC followed by rapid cooling rate increased the micro hardness of the alloy after aging due to refined grain, reduced precipitates size, decreased lamellar spacing as well as strain hardening.

Abstract Quantitative cultural studies have witnessed a surge with the rapid development of computer technology in recent years. Since ancient literature constitutes a long-time-span repository for human culture, with quantitative methods and ancient texts, scholars can study the genesis and progression of human history and society across historical epochs from digital perspectives. Nevertheless, traditional humanities scholars often lack the requisite technical skills, creating a demand for interactive platforms. This paper introduces the Evol platform—an online tool designed for the quantitative analysis of ancient literature. Equipped with various analysis functions and visualization tools, the Evol platform allows users to quantify literary documents through intuitive online interaction. Using this platform, we investigated three cases of cultural evolution in ancient Chinese history: (1) the changing attitude of the government towards nomadic ethnic groups; (2) the formulation and propagation of an allusion phrase related to the Battle of Muye; (3) the influence of the Book of Changes across diverse cultural domains. By showcasing cases across diverse semantic units and topics, Evol demonstrates its potential in providing efficient and low-cost experimental tools catering to the realms of culturomics, history, and philology.

Abstract The implementation of primary tumor resection (PTR) in the treatment of kidney cancer patients (KC) with bone metastases (BM) has been controversial. This study aims to construct the first tool that can accurately predict the likelihood of PTR benefit in KC patients with BM (KCBM) and select the optimal surgical candidates. This study acquired data on all patients diagnosed with KCBM during 2010–2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Propensity score matching (PSM) was utilized to achieve balanced matching of PTR and non-PTR groups to eliminate selection bias and confounding factors. The median overall survival (OS) of the non-PTR group was used as the threshold to categorize the PTR group into PTR-beneficial and PTR-Nonbeneficial subgroups. Kaplan–Meier (K–M) survival analysis was used for comparison of survival differences and median OS between groups. Risk factors associated with PTR-beneficial were identified using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC), area under the curve (AUC), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to validate the predictive performance and clinical utility of the nomogram. Ultimately, 1963 KCBM patients meeting screening criteria were recruited. Of these, 962 patients received PTR and the remaining 1061 patients did not receive PTR. After 1:1 PSM, there were 308 patients in both PTR and non-PTR groups. Abstract An increasing number of studies have indicated the crucial involvement of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the onset and progression of malignancies. However, a complete understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying the effect of abnormally expressed lncRNAs on breast cancer (BC) remains elusive. This study aimed to elucidate the influence of the lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 1 (SNHG1) on BC progression and its underlying mechanism. Our findings revealed a conspicuous up-regulation of SNHG1 in both BC tissues and cells. The downregulation of SNHG1 was observed to inhibit BC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) processes, while simultaneously promoting apoptosis. Furthermore, dual-luciferase reporter gene and RNA pull-down assays established that SNHG1 targeted miR-641 expression, while miR-641 targeted RRS1. Rescue studies demonstrated that in vitro SNHG1 silencing could be reversed by the miR-641 inhibitor, as well as by RRS1 upregulation. Moreover, in vivo downregulation of SNHG1 was found to inhibit BC growth. Through the inhibition of the miR-641 level, SNHG1 elevated the level of the downstream target RRS1, thereby fostering BC growth, migration, and invasion while inhibiting apoptosis. These findings suggest that SNHG1 may represent a potential therapeutic target for BC treatment.

Abstract To investigate the prevalence, types, and risk factors of functional gastrointestinal diseases (FGIDs) in Hainan Province, China, in order to provide insights for future prevention and treatment strategies. A questionnaire survey was conducted from July 2022 to May 2023, using stratified sampling to sample local residents in five cities (20 townships) in Hainan Province. Out of 2057 local residents surveyed, 659 individuals (32.0%) reported experiencing at least one FGID. The most prevalent FGIDs were functional dyspepsia (FD) (10.7%), functional constipation (FC) (9.3%), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (6.8%), functional bloating (2.2%), belching disorder (2.2%), functional diarrhea (FDr) (1.5%), functional heartburn (1.5%), and fecal incontinence (0.98%). Abstract Single image super-resolution (SISR) refers to the reconstruction from the corresponding low-resolution (LR) image input to a high-resolution (HR) image. However, since a single low-resolution image corresponds to multiple high-resolution images, this is an ill-posed problem. In recent years, generative model-based SISR methods have outperformed conventional SISR methods in performance. However, the SISR methods based on GAN, VAE, and Flow have the problems of unstable training, low sampling quality, and expensive computational cost. These models also struggle to achieve the trifecta of diverse, high-quality, and fast sampling. In particular, denoising diffusion probabilistic models have shown impressive variety and high quality of samples, but their expensive sampling cost prevents them from being well applied in the real world. In this paper, we investigate the fundamental reason for the slow sampling speed of the SISR method based on the diffusion model lies in the Gaussian assumption used in the previous diffusion model, which is only applicable for small step sizes. We propose a new Single Image Super-Resolution with Denoising Diffusion GANS (SRDDGAN) to achieve large-step denoising, sample diversity, and training stability. Our approach combines denoising diffusion models with GANs to generate images conditionally, using a multimodal conditional GAN to model each denoising step. SRDDGAN outperforms existing diffusion model-based methods regarding PSNR and perceptual quality metrics, while the added latent variable Z solution explores the diversity of likely HR spatial domain. Notably, the SRDDGAN model infers nearly 11 times faster than diffusion-based SR3, making it a more practical solution for real-world applications.

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, with a progressive loss of dopaminergic cells and fibers. The purpose of this study was to use different doses of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injection into the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) of mice to mimic the different stages of the disease and to characterize in detail their motor and non-motor behavior, as well as neuropathological features in the nigrostriatal pathway. MFB were injected with 0.5 μg, 1 μg, 2 μg of 6-OHDA using a brain stereotaxic technique. 6-OHDA induced mitochondrial damage dose-dependently, as well as substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) tyrosine hydroxylase-positive (TH+) cell loss and striatal TH fiber loss. Activation of astrocytes and microglia in the SNpc and striatum were consistently observed at 7 weeks, suggesting a long-term glial response in the nigrostriatal system. Even with a partial or complete denervation of the nigrostriatal pathway, 6-OHDA did not cause anxiety, although depression-like behavior appeared. Certain gait disturbances were observed in 0.5 μg 6-OHDA lesioned mice, and more extensive in 1 μg group. Despite the loss of more neurons from 2 μg 6-OHDA, there was no further impairment in behaviors compared to 1 μg 6-OHDA. Our data have implications that 1 μg 6-OHDA was necessary and sufficient to induce motor and non-motor symptoms in mice, thus a valuable mouse tool to explore disease progression and new treatment in PD.

Abstract Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a prevalent form of non-small cell lung cancer with a rising incidence in recent years. Understanding the mutation characteristics of LUAD is crucial for effective treatment and prediction of this disease. Among the various mutations observed in LUAD, KRAS mutations are particularly common. Different subtypes of KRAS mutations can activate the Ras signaling pathway to varying degrees, potentially influencing the pathogenesis and prognosis of LUAD. This study aims to investigate the relationship between different KRAS mutation subtypes and the pathogenesis and prognosis of LUAD. A total of 63 clinical samples of LUAD were collected for this study. The samples were analyzed using targeted gene sequencing panels to obtain sequencing data. To complement the dataset, additional clinical and sequencing data were obtained from TCGA and MSK. The analysis revealed significantly higher Ki67 immunohistochemical scores in patients with missense mutations compared to controls. Moreover, the expression level of KRAS was found to be significantly correlated with Ki67 expression. Enrichment analysis indicated that KRAS missense mutations activated the SWEET_LUNG_CANCER_KRAS_DN and CREIGHTON_ENDOCRINE_THERAPY_RESISTANCE_2 pathways. Additionally, patients with KRAS missense mutations and high Ki67 IHC scores exhibited significantly higher tumor mutational burden levels compared to other groups, which suggests they are more likely to be responsive to ICIs. Based on the data from MSK and TCGA, it was observed that patients with KRAS missense mutations had shorter survival compared to controls, and Ki67 expression level could more accurately predict patient prognosis. In conclusion, when utilizing KRAS mutations as biomarkers for the treatment and prediction of LUAD, it is important to consider the specific KRAS mutant subtypes and Ki67 expression levels. These findings contribute to a better understanding of LUAD and have implications for personalized therapeutic approaches in the management of this disease.

Abstract Nitrate (NO3 ‒) pollution poses significant threats to water quality and global nitrogen cycles. Alkaline electrocatalytic NO3 ‒ reduction reaction (NO3RR) emerges as an attractive route for enabling NO3 ‒ removal and sustainable ammonia (NH3) synthesis. However, it suffers from insufficient proton (H+) supply in high pH conditions, restricting NO3 ‒-to-NH3 activity. Herein, we propose a halogen-mediated H+ feeding strategy to enhance the alkaline NO3RR performance. Our platform achieves near-100% NH3 Faradaic efficiency (pH = 14) with a current density of 2 A cm–2 and enables an over 99% NO3 –-to-NH3 conversion efficiency. We also convert NO3 ‒ to high-purity NH4Cl with near-unity efficiency, suggesting a practical approach to valorizing pollutants into valuable ammonia products. Theoretical simulations and in situ experiments reveal that Cl-coordination endows a shifted d-band center of Pd atoms to construct local H+-abundant environments, through arousing dangling O-H water dissociation and fast *H desorption, for *NO intermediate hydrogenation and finally effective NO3 ‒-to-NH3 conversion.

Abstract The development of vascular networks in microfluidic chips is crucial for the long-term culture of three-dimensional cell aggregates such as spheroids, organoids, tumoroids, or tissue explants. Despite rapid advancement in microvascular network systems and organoid technologies, vascularizing organoids-on-chips remains a challenge in tissue engineering. Most existing microfluidic devices poorly reflect the complexity of in vivo flows and require complex technical set-ups. Considering these constraints, we develop a platform to establish and monitor the formation of endothelial networks around mesenchymal and pancreatic islet spheroids, as well as blood vessel organoids generated from pluripotent stem cells, cultured for up to 30 days on-chip. We show that these networks establish functional connections with the endothelium-rich spheroids and vascular organoids, as they successfully provide intravascular perfusion to these structures. We find that organoid growth, maturation, and function are enhanced when cultured on-chip using our vascularization method. This microphysiological system represents a viable organ-on-chip model to vascularize diverse biological 3D tissues and sets the stage to establish organoid perfusions using advanced microfluidics.

Abstract Lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathode materials have attracted extensive interest because of their high energy density. However, the rapid capacity fading and serve voltage decay over cycling make the waste management and recycling of key components indispensable. Herein, we report a facile concentrated solar radiation strategy for the direct recycling of Lithium- and manganese-rich cathodes, which enables the recovery of capacity and effectively improves its electrochemical stability. The phase change from layered to spinel on the particle surface and metastable state structure of cycled material provides the precondition for photocatalytic reaction and thermal reconstruction during concentrated solar radiation processing. The inducement of partial inverse spinel phase is identified after concentrated solar radiation treatment, which strongly enhances the redox activity of transition metal cations and oxygen anion, and reversibility of lattice structure. This study sheds new light on the reparation of spent cathode materials and designing high-performance compositions to mitigate structural degradation.

Abstract The development of highly efficient active integrated photonic circuits is crucial for advancing information and computing science. Lead halide perovskite semiconductors, with their exceptional optoelectronic properties, offer a promising platform for such devices. In this study, active micro multifunctional photonic devices were fabricated on monocrystalline CsPbBr3 perovskite thin films using a top-down etching technique with focused ion beams. The etched microwire exhibited a high-quality micro laser that could serve as a light source for integrated devices, facilitating angle-dependent effective propagation between coupled perovskite-microwire waveguides. Employing this strategy, multiple perovskite-based active integrated photonic devices were realized for the first time. These devices included a micro beam splitter that coherently separated lasing signals, an X-coupler performing transfer matrix functions with two distinguishable light sources, and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer manipulating the splitting and coalescence of coherent light beams. These results provide a proof-of-concept for active integrated functionalized photonic devices based on perovskite semiconductors, representing a promising avenue for practical applications in integrated optical chips.

Abstract Background Insufficient interfragmentary compression force (IFCF) frequently leads to unstable fixation of osteoporotic lateral tibial plateau fractures (OLTPFs). A combined cancellous lag screw (CCLS) enhances IFCF; however, its effect on OLTPF fixation stability remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effect of CCLS on OLTPF stability using locking plate fixation (LPF). Materials and methods Twelve synthetic osteoporotic tibial bones were used to simulate OLTPFs, which were fixed using LPF, LPF-AO cancellous lag screws (LPF-AOCLS), and LPF-CCLS. Subsequently, 10,000 cyclic loadings from 30 to 400 N were performed. The initial axial stiffness (IAS), maximal axial micromotion of the lateral fragment (MAM-LF) measured every 1000 cycles, and failure load after 10,000 cycles were tested. The same three fixations for OLTPF were simulated using finite element analysis (FEA). IFCFs of 0, 225, and 300 N were applied to the LPF, LPF-AOCLS, and LPF-CCLS, respectively, with a 1000-N axial compressive force. The MAM-LF, peak von Mises stress (VMS), peak equivalent elastic strain of the lateral fragment (EES-LF), and nodes of EES-LF > 2% (considered bone destruction) were calculated. Results Biomechanical tests revealed the LPF-AOCLS and LPF-CCLS groups to be superior to the LPF group in terms of the IAS, MAM-LF, and failure load (all p 2% in the LPF were higher than those in the LPF-AOCLS and LPF-CCLS. Conclusion IFCF was shown to enhance the stability of OLTPFs using LPF. Considering overscrewing, CCLS is preferably recommended, although there were no significant differences between CCLS and AOCLS.

Abstract Background Coagulation factor XI deficiency is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease with a low incidence. It usually occurs after surgery or trauma; Esophageal cancer is a common malignant tumor of the digestive tract in China. But so far, surgery-based comprehensive treatment of esophageal cancer still dominates. Case presentation We report a case of an Asian patient with XI factor deficiency and lower esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who was admitted to our hospital recently. After active preoperative preparation, the operation was successfully performed, and there was no obvious abnormal bleeding during and after the operation. Conclusions Coagulation factor XI deficiency is a relatively rare disease, and patients with the disease will face a greater risk of bleeding during the perioperative period. The encouraging perioperative outcome enables us to have a deeper understanding of surgical treatment strategies for patients with Coagulation factor XI deficiency.

Abstract Background Ribosomal protein SA (RPSA) of human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) can transfer from the cytosol to the cell surface and act as a receptor for some pathogens, including Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2), a zoonotic pathogen causing meningitis in pigs and humans. We previously reported that SS2 virulence factor enolase (ENO) binds to RPSA on the cell surface of HBMECs and induces apoptosis. However, the mechanism that activates RPSA translocation to the cell surface and induces ENO-mediated HBMEC apoptosis is unclear. Results Here, we show that RPSA localization and condensation on the host cell surface depend on its internally disordered region (IDR). ENO binds to the IDR of RPSA and promotes its interaction with RPSA and vimentin (VIM), which is significantly suppressed after 1,6-Hexanediol (1,6-Hex, a widely used tool to disrupt phase separation) treatment, indicating that ENO incorporation and thus the concentration of RPSA/VIM complexes via co-condensation. Furthermore, increasing intracellular calcium ions (Ca2+) in response to SS2 infection further facilitates the liquid-like condensation of RPSA and aggravates ENO-induced HBMEC cell apoptosis. Conclusions Together, our study provides a previously underappreciated molecular mechanism illuminating that ENO-induced RPSA condensation activates the migration of RPSA to the bacterial cell surface and stimulates SS2-infected HBMEC death and, potentially, disease progression. This study offers a fresh avenue for investigation into the mechanism by which other harmful bacteria infect hosts via cell surfaces’ RPSA.

Abstract High electro-optical conversion efficiency is one of the most distinctive features of semiconductor lasers as compared to other types of lasers. Its further increase remains a significant objective. Further enhancing the efficiency of edge-emitting lasers (EEL), which represent the highest efficiency among semiconductor lasers at present, is challenging. The efficiency of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) has always been relatively low compared to EEL. This paper, combining modeling with experiments, demonstrates the potential of multi-junction cascaded VCSELs to achieve high efficiency beyond that of EELs, our simulations show, that a 20-junction VCSEL can achieve an efficiency of more than 88% at room temperature. We fabricated VCSEL devices with different numbers of junctions and compared their energy efficiency. 15-junction VCSELs achieved a maximum efficiency of 74% at room temperature under nanosecond driving current, the corresponding differential quantum efficiency exceeds 1100%, being the largest electro-optical conversion efficiency and differential quantum efficiency reported until now for VCSELs.

Metal (aluminum and boron) based energetic materials have been wildly applied in various fields including aerospace, explosives and micro-devices due to their high energy density. Unfortunately, the low combustion efficiency and reactivity of metal fuels, especially boron (B), severely limit their practical applications. Herein, multi-component 3D microspheres of HMX/B/Al/PTFE (HBA) have been designed and successfully prepared by emulsion and solvent evaporation method to achieve superior energy and combustion reactivity. The reactivity and energy output of HBA are systematically measured by ignition-burning test, constant-volume explosion vessel system and bomb calorimetry. Due to the increased interfacial contact and reaction area, HBA shows higher flame propagation rate, faster pressurization rate and larger combustion heat of 29.95 cm/s, 1077 kPa/s, and 6164.43 J/g, which is 1.5 times, 3.5 times, and 1.03 times of the physical mixed counterpart (HBA-P). Meanwhile, HBA also shows enhanced energy output and reactivity than 3D microspheres of HMX/B/PTFE (HB) resulting from the high reactivity of Al. The reaction mechanism of 3D microspheres is comprehensively investigated through combustion emission spectral and thermal analysis (TG-DSC-MS). The superior reactivity and energy of HBA originate from the surface etching of fluorine to the inert shell (Al2O3 and B2O3) and the initiation effect of Al to B. This work offers a promising approach to design and prepare high-performance energetic materials for the practical applications.

Abstract Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) rechallenge in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a promising therapeutic strategy. The situation for ICI rechallenge can be divided into three categories: adverse events (AEs); resistance to ICIs, and rechallenge becomes compulsive because of tumor relapse while the patients had completed a 2 year course of immunotherapy. However, these categories are still controversial and should be explored further. Through voting at the 6th Straits Summit Forum on Lung Cancer, in this study we summarize the consensus of 147 experts in ICI rechallenges. A total of 97.74% experts agreed to rechallenge; 48.87% experts rechallenge with the original drug, and the others rechallenge with a different drug; 40.3% agreed to rechallenge directly after progression; 88.06% experts agreed to ICI rechallenge with a combination regimen; and factors such as previous performance status score, PD‐1 expression, and age should also be considered. Understanding the the clinical studies in ICI rechallenge could bring us one step closer to understanding the consensus. In patients with advanced NSCLC who have suffered recurrent or distant metastasis after immunotherapy, the option of rechallenge with ICIs is a promising treatment option.

Existing high-power semiconductor lasers widely use asymmetric large cavity structures or designs with short cavity lengths to enhance device performance, inevitably increasing the device threshold current density and suppressing further improvement of device performance. We have utilized rate equations analysis to investigate the impact of threshold current density on the threshold characteristic temperature of GaAs-based laser diodes at short wavelengths. A simplified carrier escape model has been employed, which is more accurate compared to the classical model of thermal carrier emission. Compared to long-wavelength laser diodes, short-wavelength laser diodes exhibit higher temperature stability due to their smaller Auger recombination coefficients. Increased internal losses caused by carrier escape and decreased injection efficiency are the main reasons for the decrease in threshold characteristic temperature with increasing temperature. The increase in threshold significantly enhances carrier escape, leading to a decrease in the threshold characteristic temperature and an increase in sensitivity to temperature. Moreover, high thresholds limit the increase in the device's decoupling factor, causing a decrease in current inject efficiency and further degradation of device performance. By increasing the barrier height, carrier escape can be effectively suppressed, thereby enhancing device performance. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data of InAlGaAs laser diodes at a wavelength of 780 nm, accurately predicting the threshold characteristics of devices with different cavity lengths at various temperatures.
